About

I am a Harvard trained mediator and negotiator. I am also a chartered arbitrator.

For more than 35 years I was a trial lawyer specializing in insurance law, product liability and property and casualty claims. I practiced throughout Canada, literally from coast to coast to coast, in the U.S. and internationally.

I am also a husband, father and community volunteer, former marathon runner and triathlete. These days, when I am not involved in helping people resolve their disputes; you will find me sailing, skiing, hiking, practicing yoga or reading.

The motto at Mountainview Elementary, where I started school, was “mens sana in corpore sano”, which usually translated means “a healthy mind in a healthy body”. I try to do something every day to maintain good physical and mental health and celebrate life.  Each day offers an opportunity to start fresh and achieve what is possible.

Amoco v. Vollmer & Associates Contractors et al. per Spiegel J.

This is a case in which we had the benefit of two very skilled , highly skilled and very experienced counsel. I practised law for many, many years before becoming a judge, and I told counsel that this is probably one of the finest demonstrations of the skill of an advocate, both sides in covering every square inch and every possibility. So it was a pleasure for me as a trial judge, knowing how difficult it is to do as lawyer, it was a pleasure to see that calibre of counsel at work.
